Moulin Rouge

The 1889 cabaret where the can-can went global. The original windmill burned down in 1915; the current one is a 1925 reconstruction. Still doing two shows a night.

The exterior is the photo — the show inside is expensive and a touch tourist-trap. Walk east along Boulevard de Clichy to escape the area's neon, then cut up Rue Houdon to begin the climb.

Place des Abbesses

One of only two surviving Hector Guimard métro entrances with the original glass canopy. The cast-iron Art Nouveau lettering is the most photographed métro sign in the city.

The Saint-Jean-de-Montmartre church on the same square (1904) is the first reinforced-concrete church in the world — easy to miss because the brick facade looks conventional. Coffee at Le Sancerre on the corner is a Montmartre standby.

Le Mur des Je t'aime

612 enamelled lava tiles in Square Jehan-Rictus, with "I love you" written 311 times in 250 languages. Installed 2000 by artist Frédéric Baron and calligrapher Claire Kito.

Tucked into a small park just east of the métro entrance — easy to miss. Find your language: there's a printed key on a small plaque to the left of the wall. Up the steps behind the wall starts the climb to Bateau-Lavoir.

Le Bateau-Lavoir

A ramshackle wooden tenement where Picasso painted Les Demoiselles d'Avignon in 1907. The original burned in 1970; the rebuilt block on Place Émile-Goudeau still hosts artist studios.

On Place Émile-Goudeau, marked with a small plaque. The square itself, with its single Wallace fountain and benches, is the prettiest spot on the climb to Place du Tertre. Take the stepped Rue Ravignan up.

The Bateau-Lavoir is the nickname of a building in the Montmartre district of the 18th arrondissement of Paris that is famous in art history as the residence and meeting place for a group of outstanding early 20th-century artists such as Pablo Picasso, men of letters, theatre people, and art dealers. It is located at No. 13 Rue Ravignan at Place Emile Goudeau, just below the Place du Tertre.

Place du Tertre

The artists' square. Once where Picasso, Modigliani, and Utrillo actually lived; now mostly portrait painters and tourists, but still the geographic heart of Montmartre village.

Walk through quickly — the painters will pitch you aggressively. Just east of the square is Saint-Pierre-de-Montmartre (1147), the oldest church in Paris after Saint-Germain-des-Prés, and almost always empty. Worth a five-minute stop before the basilica.

The Place du Tertre is a square in the 18th arrondissement of Paris, France. Only a few streets away from the Basilica of the Sacré Cœur and the Lapin Agile cabaret, it is near the summit of the city's elevated Montmartre quarter.

Sacré-Cœur

Built 1875–1914 in expiatory atonement for the Commune. The travertine stone exudes calcite when it rains, which is why the dome stays bright white. The view from the parvis spans 30 km on a clear day.

Climb the dome (paid, ~300 steps, separate entrance on the left of the basilica). Avoid the front steps after dark — pickpockets and bracelet-scammers cluster there. For a quieter view, walk around to the back terrace.
