The Square du Temple – Elie-Wiesel is a garden square in Paris, France, in the 3rd arrondissement, established in 1857. It is one of 24 city squares planned and created by Georges-Eugène Haussmann and Jean-Charles Adolphe Alphand. The square occupies the site of a medieval fortress in Paris, known as the Enclos du Temple, which was built by the Knights Templar. Parts of the fortress were later used as a prison during the French Revolution and then demolished by the mid-19th century.

Square du Temple
Where the medieval Temple complex once stood — the headquarters of the Knights Templar in France, demolished by Napoleon in 1808. Louis XVI was imprisoned in the Temple's tower from 1792 until his execution. Now a gentle public garden with a bandstand and a playground.
Enter from Rue de Bretagne. The bronze plaque on the south wall traces the outline of the medieval Temple precinct. The garden's hidden secret: a small carp pond at the back, almost always empty of visitors.

Jardin Anne Frank
Hidden behind the 17th-century Hôtel de Saint-Aignan (which houses the Jewish History Museum). Three small terraced gardens: an entry courtyard, an orchard with a chestnut tree grafted from the tree Anne Frank wrote about from her Amsterdam annexe, and a small kitchen garden. Inaugurated 2007.
Enter via the small archway at 14 Impasse Berthaud — there's no sign on the street; you're looking for an unmarked passageway. Free entry. The chestnut sapling is in the second courtyard, with a small plaque. Closes at dusk.

Marché des Enfants Rouges
39 Rue de Bretagne, founded 1615 — the oldest covered market in Paris. Named for the red-clothed orphans of a nearby 16th-century orphanage. Now equal parts produce and prepared-food stalls; the Moroccan and Italian counters at lunch are excellent.
Closed Mondays. Lunch is the move — three or four prepared-food counters serve actual meals at communal tables in the back. The Moroccan tagine counter is the local favourite; arrive at noon to beat the queue. Closes 14:30.
