The Palais Garnier, also known as Opéra Garnier, is a historic 1,979-seat opera house at the Place de l'Opéra in the 9th arrondissement of Paris, France. It was built for the Paris Opera from 1861 to 1875 at the behest of Emperor Napoleon III. Initially referred to as le nouvel Opéra de Paris, it soon became known as the Palais Garnier, "in acknowledgment of its extraordinary opulence" and the architect Charles Garnier's plans and designs, which are representative of the Napoleon III style. It was the primary theatre of the Paris Opera and its associated Paris Opera Ballet until 1989, when a new opera house, the Opéra Bastille, opened at the Place de la Bastille. The company now uses the Palais Garnier mainly for ballet. The theatre has been a monument historique of France since 1923.

Opéra Garnier
Commissioned by Napoleon III, opened 1875. Charles Garnier's design is the Belle-Époque template: every surface ornamented, every staircase performative. The phantom is fictional but the underground lake isn't — sort of.
Self-guided tickets (paid) let you wander the grand staircase, the auditorium, and the Chagall ceiling on your own. The Opéra's library on the second floor has a small free museum — easy to miss if you don't ask. Avoid Mondays — frequent rehearsal closures.

Harry's New York Bar
5 Rue Daunou, opened 1911 by an American jockey turned bartender. The Bloody Mary, the Side Car, the White Lady, and the French 75 were all invented here. Hemingway, Fitzgerald, Sartre, Coco Chanel, Humphrey Bogart, all regulars. The interior — mahogany bar, stained glass, college pennants — is unchanged.
The downstairs piano bar (Le Piano Bar du Sous-Sol) opens around 22:00 — Gershwin played here in the 1920s, supposedly composing An American in Paris in his head. Order a Bloody Mary and ask for the original 1921 recipe — they'll humour you.

Galeries Lafayette dome
1912. Slightly later than 1900 but in the same Belle Époque idiom — Ferdinand Chanut's neo-Byzantine glass dome, 33 m above the central atrium, with stained glass by Jacques Gruber. The balconies, ironwork, and dome are original.
Enter at 40 Boulevard Haussmann. Walk to the centre and look up. The first-floor balcony is the matching angle to most period photographs. The rooftop terrace (free, signposted) is a separate experience and worth the lift up.

Eighth-floor rooftop terrace, free. ~50 m above street level. Sacré-Cœur, the Opéra, and the Eiffel Tower are all visible from a single panorama. Most tourists don't know it's there.
Free — no ticket, no queue. Take the escalators (not lifts) to the top floor; rooftop signage takes you the last leg. Order a coffee at the small bar if you want to sit; otherwise just walk the perimeter.
