Parc Montsouris
One of the four big English-style parks Alphand laid out under the Second Empire, opened in 1869 across some fifteen hilly hectares on the Left Bank. Rolling lawns built for picnics, a large artificial lake, mature exotic trees, and a quieter crowd than the central gardens.
Borders the Cité Universitaire; RER B to Cité Universitaire drops you across Boulevard Jourdan. The slope toward the lake is the picnic ground.

Montparnasse & Denfert — The other Left BankThe Lost Generation's Montparnasse brasseries, the Catacombs, Parc Montsouris, and crêperies clustered by the station. Quietly residential, with a literary past it wears lightly.
Best for: Calm-seekers who still want the Left Bank and good train links.
