Galerie Vivienne

The grandest of the surviving 1820s arcades, built in 1823 between the Bourse and the Palais-Royal. A vaulted glass roof throws light onto floor mosaics laid by Italian craftsmen; the tenants run to rare-book dealers and a long-established tea room rather than chains.

Long-running

Enter from rue Vivienne and look down before you look up: the Facchina mosaic floor is the reason to slow your pace.

The smallest arrondissement, threaded with nineteenth-century glass-roofed passages and, lately, the city's tech and restaurant energy around Rue Montorgueil and the old textile Sentier.

Best for: Eaters and drinkers who want to walk home; central without the Louvre crowds.
