  Rue Cler

  Five blocks of pedestrianised market street in the 7th, between Avenue de la Motte-Picquet and Rue de Grenelle. Quieter and posher than Aligre — more bistros and patisseries, fewer haggling locals. Come for the cheese shops.

  The Café du Marché on the corner of Rue Cler and Rue de Grenelle is the spot for a Sunday-morning omelette. Walk the street north-to-south. The fromagerie Marie-Anne Cantin (no. 12) is one of the city's best cheese shops; closed Mondays.

  Sewers museum

  Musée des Égouts de Paris, near Pont de l'Alma. A short walk through actual operational sewer tunnels — 200 m of catwalks alongside the flowing water. Reopened 2021 after a long renovation; surprisingly clean now, surprisingly stinky still.

  Ticketed, paid. Avoid right after rain (running water sound is loud). The exhibition above is dry — both literally and tonally — but the descent into the actual sewer is the reason. Hand sanitiser at the exit; use it.

  Eiffel Tower

  Built for the 1889 World's Fair as a temporary installation; the city forgot to dismantle it. 18,038 wrought-iron parts, 2.5 million rivets.

  Buy summit tickets weeks ahead — same-day usually means second-floor only. For an underrated free view, walk under the tower (no ticket required) and look straight up: the perspective is geometrically dizzying. The hourly evening sparkle lasts five minutes.

  Eiffel Tower

  276 m to the top. Three viewing levels — first floor (57 m), second floor (115 m), and summit. The summit lift only runs from the second floor, so it's two separate ticketed climbs.

  Buy summit tickets weeks ahead — same-day usually means second-floor only. Climb the stairs to the second floor (704 steps; about 30 min) — far cheaper, way fewer queues, no time pressure. Then take the summit lift from there.
