Place du Marché Sainte-Catherine
A small pedestrianised square laid out 1783 on the site of a former market. Surrounded on three sides by 18th-century buildings; the four cafés on the square set up tables under the chestnut trees. One of the quietest squares in central Paris on a weekday afternoon.
Lunch at any of the four cafés is reliable and the square is what you came for. Le Bourguignon du Marais (no. 17) is the standby. Walk through slowly.

Wall of Philippe Auguste, Rue des Jardins-Saint-Paul
The longest visible fragment of the 1190 city wall built by Philippe II — 60 m long, with two towers still standing, in the playground of a school. Marais was largely spared by Haussmann (who ran out of money), so wall fragments still survive in courtyards.
Enter Rue des Jardins-Saint-Paul from Rue Saint-Antoine. The fragment is on the south side, easily visible through the school playground railings. There's no plaque — this is just a thirty-second look at a 12th-century wall, accidentally preserved.

Musée Carnavalet
23 Rue de Sévigné. Free city-of-Paris museum dedicated to the city's history, in two adjoining 16th- and 17th-century mansions. Reopened 2021 after a five-year renovation — the new layout chronological and beautiful. Holds Proust's reconstructed cork-lined bedroom from 102 Boulevard Haussmann.
Free entry. Allow 2 hours minimum. Start on the top floor (Roman/medieval Paris) and work down chronologically. The two 18th-century salons on the first floor — golden boiseries, intact rococo plasterwork — are the rainy-day reward.

Jardin de l'Hôtel de Sens
Behind the late-15th-century fortified Hôtel de Sens, now the Bibliothèque Forney (decorative arts library). A small formal garden with topiary, a fountain, and benches looking back at the medieval mansion. Open during library hours.
Enter the courtyard from Rue du Figuier (gates open during library hours, ~13:00–19:00 weekdays). Walk through the courtyard to find the small back garden — most visitors stop at the courtyard and miss this. The library upstairs has rotating poster exhibitions, all free.
