The Rue Montorgueil is a street in the 1st arrondissement and 2nd arrondissement of Paris, France. Lined with restaurants, cafés, bakeries, fish stores, cheese shops, wine shops, produce stands and flower shops, the Rue Montorgueil is a place for Parisians to socialize while doing their daily shopping. At the southernmost tip of the Rue Montorgueil is Saint-Eustache Church, and Les Halles, containing the largest indoor shopping mall in central Paris; and to the north is the area known as the Grands Boulevards. While cars are not banned from the street, the priority is for pedestrians who can enjoy the cafés and shops while walking down the cobblestones.

Rue Montorgueil
Pedestrianised market street running through the 1st and 2nd. Cheese, fish, oysters, bread, wine, all on one block. Stohrer (1730) is mid-street; Le Rocher de Cancale (1846) was already a writers' hangout when Balzac was alive.
Walk the whole length, north to south, between Rue Tiquetonne and Rue Saint-Sauveur. The fish stall opposite Stohrer opens at 7 am with the previous day's catch. La Maison Stohrer (no. 51) is on the Sweet Paris tour; allow time to detour in.

Stohrer
51 Rue Montorgueil, opened 1730 by Nicolas Stohrer, pâtissier to Louis XV. The oldest patisserie in Paris. The baba au rhum was invented here. Walls are classified historic. The window display alone is a 290-year-old argument for sugar.
Order a baba au rhum (the original recipe; ask them to add the rum at the counter) and walk it across the street to one of the benches on Rue Montorgueil. The Puits d'Amour — caramelised cream puff — is the second classic.

Au Pied de Cochon
6 Rue Coquillière, opened 1947 to feed the workers of Les Halles market. Open 24 hours since 1948 (briefly closed for COVID). The eponymous pig's foot — grilled, breaded, with béarnaise — is still the move at 4am.
Best between 1 and 4 am — the room fills with chefs from other restaurants finishing their shifts. Order the soupe à l'oignon gratinée and the pied de cochon panné. The basement bar is open on the weekends and serves until dawn.

Centre Pompidou
Renzo Piano and Richard Rogers's 1977 'inside-out' museum: pipes and ducts on the outside, exhibition floors uncluttered by them. Closed for renovation 2025–2030.
While it's closed, walk around the back to the Stravinsky Fountain (Niki de Saint Phalle and Jean Tinguely, 1983) — sixteen kinetic sculptures in a shallow pool. The square in front of the Pompidou usually has buskers; the cobbles slope so a coffee at the corner cafés gives you a slight downhill view of it all.
