Café des Musées
A 1924 corner bistro with mosaic floor, dark woodwork and an open kitchen you can watch from the room. Its bœuf bourguignon was named best in Paris by Le Figaro and the kitchen has coasted on that reputation, more or less deservedly, since.
Take the weekday lunch formule at €19.50, or come specifically for the bourguignon. The room is small — book ahead.

Square Georges-Cain
8 Rue Payenne. A small park behind the Carnavalet Museum, dotted with archaeological fragments — Roman columns, medieval gargoyles, 17th-century statuary — that didn't fit inside the museum. Surrounded on all four sides by Marais mansions.
Enter from Rue Payenne. The fragments are not labelled; this isn't a museum, it's a garden where stones happen to live. The benches under the chestnut trees are the local lunch spot. Open 8 am to dusk.

Musée Carnavalet
23 Rue de Sévigné. Free city-of-Paris museum dedicated to the city's history, in two adjoining 16th- and 17th-century mansions. Reopened 2021 after a five-year renovation — the new layout chronological and beautiful. Holds Proust's reconstructed cork-lined bedroom from 102 Boulevard Haussmann.
Free entry. Allow 2 hours minimum. Start on the top floor (Roman/medieval Paris) and work down chronologically. The two 18th-century salons on the first floor — golden boiseries, intact rococo plasterwork — are the rainy-day reward.

Musée Picasso
Hôtel Salé, 5 Rue de Thorigny — a 1659 mansion built by a salt-tax collector (hence the name). Has held the national Picasso collection since 1985: 5,000 works donated by the artist's heirs in lieu of inheritance taxes. The renovated 17th-century interiors compete with the paintings.
Free first Sunday of each month. The fourth-floor attic galleries (sculpture and ceramics) are the least crowded — most visitors burn out on the second floor. Allow at least 2 hours.

Le Mary Celeste
1 Rue Commines, opened 2013 by the team behind Candelaria (the Marais speakeasy that started Paris's cocktail revival). Octopus-themed (look up at the chandelier), tight space, focus on small plates and short, idiosyncratic cocktail menus. Reservations now mandatory weekends.
Get the oysters with mignonette. The cocktail menu rotates every few months; ask the bartender to make the bartender's-choice if you can't decide. Standing-room at the bar is sometimes available without reservation if you arrive at 18:00 opening.
